I believed as a child that I was doomed to live in the shadow of humanity’s failure to colonize space. I do, of course. Any such travels as I fondly desire may only be the joys of my great-grandchildren, if that. Yet, I find myself excited by the possibility of ubiquitous and distributed computing, of the great shift in humanity’s basic relationship with knowledge and communication that represents. Our brains are wired up somewhat destructively with regard to persistent, always fresh flows of information; properly designed devices with casual sprinklings of AI can overcome that. Consider Readability and the computer science behind its approach. We now carry such vast computational power in the palms of our hands (or on in bags, for those of us still using laptops); we need but understand its potential.
